Un Grand Prix de Fourmies masculin et féminin une nouvelle fois dominé par les sprinteurs et sprinteuses 

Comme c’est désormais une habitude, les 5 baroudeurs qui avaient réussi à prendre le large (après 7 kilomètres de course, entre Anor et Fourmies et qui ont eu jusqu’2’40 d’avance sur le peloton) ont été avalés par le peloton dans la dernière boucle autour de Fourmies, à moins de 4 kilomètres de Fourmies. Il s’agissait du Néerlandais Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert), des Français Maxime Jarnet (Go Sport Roubaix Lille Métropole) et Nicolas Debeaumarché (St Michel-Aubert93) et des Belges Louis Blouwe (Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB) et Milan Fretin (Sport Vlaanderen Baloise).

Une chute chamboule le sprint à moins de 4km de l’arrivée

Une chute en tête du peloton, à 3km700 de l’arrivée, a empêché certains sprinters, dont Fabio Jakobsen, le champion d’Europe en titre et Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Soudal), de se mêler à l’emballage final. Malgré cela, le Grand Prix de Fourmies a une nouvelle fois offert aux spectateurs un sprint royal et tendu, avec plusieurs vagues à déplorer dans le dernier kilomètre.

Parmi les 40 rescapés de la chute, c’est le Néerlandais Dylan Groenewegen (Team BikeExchange – Jayco), vainqueur d’étape cette année sur le tour de France, qui a lancé les hostilités. Il a finalement été dépassé à moins de 20m de la ligne d’arrivée par l’Australien Caleb Ewan, de chez Lotto-Soudal. Ce quintuple vainqueur d’étapes sur le tour de France et lauréat de Milan-San-Remo était bel et bien le plus fort dimanche soir à Fourmies, pour le grand bonheur de Jacques Thibaut, le Président du comité d’organisation du GPF :

Précisons que trois coureurs tricolores ont réussi à se placer dans le Top 10 : Jason Tesson, le sprinter de chez St Michel - Auber93, recruté chez Total Énergies pour la saison prochaine, a terminé 5ème. Julien Simon (TotalEnergies), le leader de la coupe de France, a conforté sa place dans ce classement en s’offrant une belle septième place au Grand Prix de Fourmies, devant Marc Sarreau (AG2R Citroën).

La championne Clara Copponi s’offre la version féminine du Grand Prix de Fourmies

Après plusieurs tentatives d’échappées, dont une en solitaire de la régionale de l’étape, Victoire Berteaux, la 3ème édition de la Choralis Fourmies Féminine Classic s’est elle aussi terminée au sprint. C’est la Française Clara Copponi (FDJ Suez Futuroscope) qui s’est imposée aux termes des117 kilomètres de course. A 23 ans, Clara Copponi est considérée comme étant l’une des meilleurs espoirs du cyclisme féminin, affichant déjà 8 titres de championne de France à son palmarès et une participation en équipe de France au JO de Tokyo en 2020.

La récente triple médaillée sur piste aux Championnats d'Europe a devancé l'Italienne Valentina Basilico (Bepink) et la Portugaise Maria Martins (Le Col - Wahoo). Deux autres Tricolores terminent dans le Top 10 : Valentine Fortin (Cofidis) finit 4ème et Marie-Morgane Le Deunff de l’équipe Arkéa s’est offerte une belle et méritée 10ème place.
